Case sent to DA after former teacher accused of sex assault

The District Attorney's office will now decide whether to file formal charges against a former teacher at an exclusive private school accused of sexually assaulting a student.
Denver Police say 40-year-old Meredith Hollen had inappropriate contact with a student who, at the time, attended Graland Country Day School.

Hollen has not been teaching at the school this year, according to police, and the alleged assault happened before the school year.

Police say they were only recently notified of the incident and do not know where the alleged encounter took place.

All documents in the case were sealed on Tuesday.

Records with the Colorado Bureau of Investigation show that Hollen was arrested on November 2 and booked into the Denver County Jail. She was released after posting a $50,000 bond. She faces two counts of sexual assault on a child and another count of sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust.

"We are in the midst of investigating a former teacher at Graland Country Day for having an inappropriate relationship with a student. She is currently being investigated for sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust," said Sonny Jackson, spokesperson for the Denver Police Department. "I believe the school has notified parents in the area so we've taken appropriate measures. At this point in time, we're in the middle of our investigation."

The Denver DA's office was given the case this week.

Graland is a kindergarten through 9th grade school with 638 students, according to the school's Web site. It has been a prestigious college preparatory school for 83 years.

Police will not say what grade the victim was in at the time of the alleged incident, but did say he is no longer a student at the school.

Parents told 9NEWS they were notified of the allegations in a recent newsletter sent home to parents.

The school released a statement to 9NEWS on Monday night: "We are surprised and saddened by the allegations of impropriety involving a former Graland faculty member. The school has not been contacted by any law enforcement agency. We will cooperate in any investigation. The safety of our students continues to be our first concern."

Hollen is scheduled to be in court on Friday.
